Introduction
Sarcoptes scabiei is a small eight – legged mite that burrows under the skin causing an itchy condition named scabies. The itchy sensation can be very intense in the area of the mite's burrowing place. The almost irresistible urge of scratching manifested especially at night when one is sleeping creates an uncomfortable state.
Due to the contagious nature of the condition of scabies caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, it is highly recommended by the doctors that all the persons that came into close physical contact with the affected person, family, school colleagues, child care groups, home nursing groups, to be treated for the mite to be eliminated.
Although the treatment for this condition will eliminate the mite that causes it, the symptom of itching may still persist for a few more weeks.
The complications of scabies
The skin can be broken by a serious round of scratching to relieve the itchy sensation and thus, a second infection of the skin, such as impetigo, may appear. It can be caused by the staphylococci bacteria or in some cases by the streptococci bacteria and it is a superficial infection of the skin.
Look for medical advice
Scabies is not eliminated by long bathing or intense body care. In case one encounters signs or symptoms of scabies, or has been in contact with a person who has scabies, he or she should see a doctor.
In certain groups of people like hospitals or nursing centers, HIV positive people or those with chronic leukemia, people that have an altered immune system, scabies can spread very fast and become a serious persistent problem.
The symptomatology (itchy sensation, bumps on the skin) of scabies resembles to those of many other skin conditions like eczemas or dermatitis. In case those signs appear, a doctor should be asked for his opinion in order to provide the best treatment.
Ways to Prevent a Scabies Infestation
Papular scabies is the most common form of scabies. Scabies is a skin disorder caused by parasitic microorganisms called mites that burrow into the layers of the skin. This condition is highly contagious, being able to spread through direct physical contact or through sharing personal items that were contaminated.
